As part of International Day (May 5th) at CSIHSIS, students will create a virtual collage of their background, demonstrate what culture means to them.

You will make 2 posts! They should be:

1 - What does culture mean to you? Describe your culture. How important is it to you and your family?

2 - (After reviewing student posts) Post/comment on one thing you learned about someone else's culture.

Culture is a way of life for a group of people. The people would have celebrations their own religion or language. This is what I think culture is.

Culture means a unique way of expressing your ideas and feelings. My culture is not as interesting and unique as others. Although it s kind of important to my my family and I. Especially my relatives that are living outside of the U.S.A..

Culture represents who you are and where you came from. The family that i live with is all Italian and my dads family is German and English. My italian family is very loud and they like to have really big parties. In my culture we celebrate many holidays that others don't like palm sunday and we eat dinner early every sunday of the week. Culture is important to me and my family because our culture passes down traditions throughout the family and represents who my family is.

To me, culture is the certain way of living for a specific group of people. I believe culture has a lot of influence on people. Culture is who you are, everyone on this planet has a culture. My family pretty much follows the usual popular culture (Typical American culture). We celebrate the usual holidays and celebrations, we don't have shrines or cultural attire, just the typical American style, and there's nothing wrong with that. We don't have a special food that we have only at certain times of the year, we eat whatever we want when we want to. America may have adopted its culture from many others around the world, but in the end it's still American culture. I also have another culture, my school culture. I count my school's international exploration as a culture, and I'm really proud of it.

Culture to me means a way of life. I come from a family with Filipino, French and Spanish backgrounds. My family is big, and we love spending time together, just like mot families. My family's culture is important to us, and it shows mostly through food. My family love cooking traditional Filipino and Spanish food. My family is also big on dance and music. Ask any other person who has the same background, parties for us are never boring.

i think culture is how you describe where someone is from. culture is different for every nationality because they live and do things different. my culture is just american. most of my family was born and raised in america. so culture is really not that serious in my family. we do celebrate american holidays and thats pretty much it.

Culture is a way of expressing ones nationality through language, clothing, food, living styles, building features, and national holidays.

My culture is Chinese. One national holiday for the Chinese is Chinese New Years. During Chinese New Years, families would go visit their other family members to have a feast and talk. Everyone would sit at the table with a bunch of dishes for everyone to share. The kids get red envelopes filled with money on CNY. Like on CNY, when eating meals at home or eating at restaurants, all the family members would eat together with a bunch of dishes.

The importance of my culture to my family and I is a great deal since my families culture is what we live with and express towards everyone to show that this is what Chinese culture is.

Culture to me is a way of life. Its a specific traditions, that can be passed down from generation to generation. Its your families background and nationality / heritage. It makes up what holidays you celebrate, what you eat, how you dress, and even what music you listen to. My nationality is Japanese, Chinese, and Puerto Rican. This makes up who I am and how and what holidays I celebrate. I celebrate Christmas, New Years, Halloween, Easter, birthdays, and more holidays. It is important to my family because it makes up our way of life.

I learned about other peoples cultures and certain things them and there family do, like have Sunday dinners, and also certain peoples languages they speak. I also learned that people say they have a school culture which I never heard of before.

I am puerto rican, italian, irish, polish, german, swiss, dutch, cherokee, and a few more. Where I am from is important to my culture, but it does not affect who i am. I will still be the same girl i am. Culture is important to me and my family, but not that important. We celebrate our holidays, and that is all the culture we need.

I think that culture is important to people. It helps people know who the truly are and where they come from. My culture is very mixed up. I am very much involved in my family's Filipino culture. We usually have big family gatherings and eat lots of food. Everyone usually talks in Tagalog (main language). The other culture that I am apart of is Canadian family , when I visit them we go to sugar shacks and make maple syrup and speak in french. This is part of my culture.

Culture is the beliefs, traditions, religion, language, etc. that a certain group of people follow through with . There are many different holidays, types of music/dance, that correspond with different cultures. I am Irish and Puerto Rican but my family doesn't really take what we are too seriously. No matter where were from or what we believe were still just people .

From reading the other comments , I learned that there are a lot of different ways different cultures and nationalities celebrate holidays and stuff.

Culture is a very big part of each and every one of us. It determines where we come from and our family's past. Culture should always be held onto and passed on down to every generation. My culture is all greek and my religion is Greek Orthodox Christianity. I celebrate almost all Greek holidays, and go to church often. I speak and write the greek language and have been to Greece 3 times. Obviously, my culture is very important to my family and me. We definitely do a good job at preserving it.

I learned that culture is also influenced by religion. Also, our culture is our ethnic background. I am Chinese, but I am also American. Chinese is my ethic background, but I can say I'm also American.

Culture to me is what makes a person who they are in some way or another. Culture is the background of ones life. There are many different cultures in the world. My nationalities are Irish, Italian, German which have alot to do with who i am and the way i act. My religion is Catholic, and I have a few traditions that i follow. Christmas , Lent, Easter, and more. One other culture i learned about is the Jewish culture. They practice other things then my religion does and has different holiday.

                          1. To me, culture is a way of. Culture is traditions and beliefs of a group of people. I am half Italian and half European. The Italian side of my family celebrates their culture more than my English side. On Sundays, we have an Italian dinner such as spaghetti and meatballs. We also celebrate Italian holidays.

                          2. From reading other student's posts, I have learned about the cultures of other nationalities other than my own. I learned that each culture has their own special traditions.

I feel that culture is the main aspect of a persons life. Culture define who they are along with their background. Culture is determined on what language a person speaks, the music they listen to, the clothes the wear, the faith they practice, the food they eat, etc. I am an egyptian, and I speak arabic, drums are used in most arabic music, we eat middle eastern food, etc.

While reading other's posts, I've noticed that the main definition of culture is overall similar. Some people like Nicolette stress that culture is not as important, but it is still a part of her. Others make culture seem like the most important thing to them. It is all based on opinion.

My culture is a mix of 3 American, Italian and Irish. My culture is very important to me and my family because it contrasts who we are and how it controls our daily lives. We mostly eat the food because it is the best part of our cultures. Italians and Irish have one main thing in common they are both catholic countries in most part. My culture is pretty delicate to me because it gives me my strengths and my weaknesses.

I don't have a specific tradition for any of these nationalities. My mom is Jewish and my dad is Catholic. I celebrate all Jewish and Catholic holidays and my moms side of the family makes Jewish foods such as matza ball soup, kasha, noodle pudding and seder foods. My dads family makes a lot of Italian food such as pasta, meatballs, soups ad garlic bread. I love my culture and its very important to me.

American culture, for example, includes eating at Burger King and celebrating Thanksgiving. Though some cultures are similar, some other customs from each culture make it different.

Culture is a person's way of living. Culture can describe a person's nationality as well as their personality. During international day at CSIHSIS, I learned many different cultures around the world and how they live.
My culture/nationality is FIlipino. Being filipino is very special to me. There are big family gathering where everyone comes together to have a great feast and have a chance to bond. While everyone speaks in Tagalog, the little children have a chance to learn about their culture through the language. Having huge parties are never a joke. Different families come together to have fun. Parties for us are never boring! ^.^

Some people define culture as their nationality or religion, but culture can also be groups that you are involved in. For instance I'm a Gamer. So as you can see Culture is a pretty broad subject.

1 - What does culture mean to you? Describe your culture. How important is it to you and your family?

To me culture is everything around me. Whether it be food or dances or music, it's a way of living our individual lives. I'm Filipino and my culture has a flavor of Spanish tradition mixed in. :]
Spanish culture is mixed in through the language and in some of the foods.
Culture is important to family because it keeps us together. It is tradition, and without tradition the world would be pretty bland.

Culture is a way of expressing peoples thoughts, values, beliefs, and their way of life. There are many different holidays for people from every nation celebrating their love for their country or culture. Culture is something i should be more interested in but of course is important to every family. Culture is life! My family is mostly Irish and Norwegian with some German, Dutch, ect. Our culture is important to our family and we are proud to be what we are!
When we had international day at our school I was able to learn about different cultures besides my own.

I have learned about many different cultures throughout international day at CSIHSIS. I learned that Caroline Pinsky is part filipino. We share the same traditions in which families come together and have big gatherings.

To me culture means family. Cultures the way i was raised and how my life is. I would define my culture as somewhat a traditional Italian family. We celebrate all the traditional holidays and will always find a way to eat pasta on every occasion. My great grandpa's both came from Italy and have passed down mostly all of his family traditions and with some tweeking we made it a way of life.

Even though i have a strict idea of culture many people have different definitions. Culture is the way you live the things you do. Family, friends, sports, food, and many different things. From other peoples posting i have learned that culture is their religion and there way of life as well even though its different than mine

I always viewed old customs as culture ,but the different types of dress and music are also a part of the culture that is developing among people today. It is a choice to some extent whether we chose to be a part of a certain culture or not, I realized that a person ca be a part of both the old and the new in today's world when they blend the two together.

Culture is way of showing who you are and what your family backrounds are based on. Culture is a part of our lives, it's what makes us who we are today. My nationality is Spanish, so we don't really celebrate any national holidays other then dias de los muertos, which is on october 31, sam day as halloween. So I take more of an interest in other cultures. Although I'm proud to say I'm hispanic, it's what makes me who I am today.

Other countries eat different kinds of foods and celebrate different holidays.

The characteristics are holidays, architecture, music, sports, etc. An example of American culture is Thanksgiving. My family's culture is Italian. Some Italian culture's are eating pasta, and also spending Sunday with your family. Every sunday my entire family goes to my grandpa's house. It is me, my mom, my dad, 5 aunts, 6 uncles, 7 cousins, and grandpa. It is really fun to see your family every week. I think everyone should do that. Italian culture also means having big parties, spending time with your family.

After reviewing another student's post of their culture i learned that Polish people celebrate Christmas Eve more than Christmas Day. Christmas Eve is more important to them, the do everything that ost people would d on Christmas Day on Christmas Eve. Polish people also celebrate name day, and Birthday's. Name day is when you celebrate an important person's name that is the same as yours. That is what i learned about Polish culture.
